- ➤ MainStreet Oceanside will hold its monthly morning meeting on Tuesday, May 6 at 8:30 a.m. at 701 Mission Avenue — where residents, businesspeople and city staff can get updates on community events and share ideas over coffee and donuts. The Vista Press
- ➤ The Oceanside Chamber of Commerce announced several events including a Military Affairs Forum on May 8 from 8 to 9 a.m., Second Tuesday Coffee on May 13 from 8 to 9 a.m., and a Signature event on May 17 that will honor active-duty military and their families. The chamber hosted a Rising Star Scholarship Ceremony awarding $50,000 to 30 students and reported that the US Army Corps of Engineers began the harbor dredge around April 15 + residents should be careful near heavy equipment + more programs like energy bill help and health screenings are available. - ➤ Cuts to federal funding and fewer local donations have forced Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to end the Emergency Food Assistance Program that aids 100,000 people; CEO Casey Castillo said the move will result in a loss of about 1.5 million meals—calling on the community for help. The food bank is hosting its annual gala tomorrow to fund the Food for Kids Backpack Program that supports 3,700 elementary students. CBS8

- ➤ Cinco de Mayo celebrations will take place throughout San Diego County this weekend—featuring events in Old Town, the Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, Vista and Escondido with live music, food and cultural displays. SeaWorld will host festivities from May 3—5 with special entertainment and discounted margaritas. CBS8
- ➤ Oceanside Theatre Company is showing Latin History for Morons, a play by Rick Najera that retells 3,000 years of Latin history in 110 minutes — it uses humor and frank language to cover topics from the Aztec Empire to today’s pop culture. This production is the first professional staging in San Diego outside of Leguizamo’s touring run — it is recommended for mature audiences. North County Daily Star
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Oceanside police have launched a new drone response pilot program that will operate from City Hall to cut service call response times from five minutes to one minute in downtown areas west of Interstate 5 — the drone works with a new Real-Time Crime Center and will only be used under strict guidelines to protect privacy. City Council approved the program on April 23, and it is funded by a state grant while some community members raise concerns about surveillance. The Coast News
- ➤ On April 29th, the City of Oceanside held a formal ceremony to open its Safe Parking Program for residents facing vehicular homelessness. The program, which has run since February 28th and provides overnight parking for up to 25 households plus essential support services, now serves 18 households through community referrals. - ➤ Frank Nunez — a longtime Vista resident and sales manager chosen from two local candidates — was named by the Vista Irrigation District Board to fill the division 2 seat after Byron Olson resigned in March; he will serve until the November election and lead a nonprofit effort to help young filmmakers.
