COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Cuts to federal funding and fewer local donations have forced Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank to end the Emergency Food Assistance Program that aids 100,000 people; CEO Casey Castillo said the move will result in a loss of about 1.5 million meals—calling on the community for help. The food bank is hosting its annual gala tomorrow to fund the Food for Kids Backpack Program that supports 3,700 elementary students.  CBS8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Cinco de Mayo celebrations will take place throughout San Diego County this weekend—featuring events in Old Town, the Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village, Vista and Escondido with live music, food and cultural displays. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oceanside police have launched a new drone response pilot program that will operate from City Hall to cut service call response times from five minutes to one minute in downtown areas west of Interstate 5 — the drone works with a new Real-Time Crime Center and will only be used under strict guidelines to protect privacy. City Council approved the program on April 23, and it is funded by a state grant while some community members raise concerns about surveillance.  The Coast News
