Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 29th of May.
Good morning, Oceanside.
An 11-foot oarfish that washed ashore in Encinitas last fall is now on display at Birch Aquarium at Scripps, where visitors can learn about its science and the legends that once called it a sea monster.
The exhibit runs through summer—offered with general admission and providing a rare look at one of the ocean's deepest mysteries.
The Oceanside Planning Commission approved an infill housing project on May 19 that will add 35 single-family homes to a 4-acre lot in Fire Mountain—using a state density bonus law that allows six deed-restricted affordable homes.
Some residents oppose the plan because they fear it will bring at least 70 extra cars to their streets.
Miles Byrd, who started 30 games (averaging 12.3 points) last season, announced on Instagram that he will return to San Diego State men's basketball for his junior season after he declared for the NBA Draft on April 26.
Head coach Brian Dutcher said NBA evaluations will help Byrd develop his skills as the team prepares to chase another Mountain West championship next season.
