EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation awarded $94,000 in scholarships to 22 outstanding high school graduates to support their higher education. Students from county fair programs will attend various colleges across the country, with three recipients earning $10,000 each (including paths to Harvard and Yale).  The Vista Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and is expected to be quieter due to developing El Niño, with NOAA predicting 8 to 14 named storms and peak activity around Sept. 10. Local residents are urged to review hurricane readiness plans as even one storm hitting coastal areas could have a big impact.  CBS8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • California saw one of the largest drops in homelessness based on a HUD point-in-time count, with San Diego County recording an 11% fall in unsheltered residents last month. Local nonprofit experts warn — the count shows only a snapshot, not long-term trends.  CBS8
  • Officials restored 320,000 cubic yards of sand along Oceanside beaches when the dredging project was completed in early May to clear the harbor channel; an $8.2 million federal package will support fall maintenance to keep the harbor safe for boaters — ensuring business continuity ahead of a busy summer.  CBS8
  • New federal rules went into effect Monday for certain CalFresh recipients in San Diego County who must meet work or volunteer requirements, affecting over 100,000 residents. County officials said a new website with job training + volunteer resources is set to be announced.  CBS8
