- ➤ Cardiff resident David Richardson secured a patent in 2019 for a floating nuclear power plant that uses a moored spar platform with reactors to produce 3,000 MW of power continuously for 50 years. His design, inspired by a research vessel that flips in storms, could lower energy costs and may require help from the Navy due to its use of 90% enriched uranium & boost clean energy options along the coast. - ➤ The U.S. resumed student visa appointments with a new rule that requires applicants to make their social media accounts public for review, and local immigration attorney Ian Seruelo warned the rule may lead to lower enrollment in local universities—he advised applicants to review their posts without deleting older content if it does not support terrorism. - ➤ County supervisors Montgomery Steppe and Lawson-Remer warned that federal funding cuts from the Big Beautiful Bill Act may force the county to cover key programs such as Medi-Cal, behavioral health, hospital operations, CalFresh, and homelessness services. They will start a staffing and operational review now and complete a fiscal analysis in September to plan for costs that may begin in January—while reconsidering the use of reserve funds to back up these services.
