Good morning, Oceanside. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 23rd of July.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Stuff the Bus drive will run until July 31 — raising funds to provide backpacks and school supplies to over 23,000 San Diego County students experiencing homelessness. CBS 8 partnered with SDCCU, participating Jersey Mike’s and the San Diego County Office of Education — marking the 11th annual campaign.  CBS8

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rincon Homes has proposed building 83 single-family homes on a 10-acre site near Guajome Lake and environmental advocates say the project risks harming wildlife corridors and nesting areas—plans include a new recreation area, mitigation measures, and upgraded fire zones ahead of an Aug. 11 Planning Commission hearing. The development is expected to impact the local habitat as it moves forward.  The Coast News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Raider, a one-year-old rescue Labrador mix from a Riverside County shelter, is training to serve as a morale dog aboard the USS Makin Island later this summer. He is learning booties and eye protection — his training is managed by five handlers to boost comfort for nearly 1,000 sailors.  CBS8
  • In June, the San Diego County Water Authority and the Metropolitan Water District ended a 15-year legal dispute over water rates—this new deal will keep water bills low and supply steady for residents. Board Chair Nick Serrano said the settlement lets them use past investments to bring more stability to rates.  CBS8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Planning commissioners approved a 19-unit twin-home development on a 1.7-acre lot at 240 Grace Street in the Loma Alta neighborhood, with homes offering five floor plans and including affordable units by developer Hallmark Communities. Some residents raised concerns about stormwater, traffic, and privacy, but the project features biofiltration basins—and a private street—to address these issues.  The Coast News
