COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Meals on Wheels San Diego County will celebrate National Grandparents' Day this Sunday with a special three-generation delivery team that will bring a healthy meal to 78-year-old Lorraine Perrino, who lives alone on a fixed income with her service dog — a move that highlights the group's fight against hunger and loneliness. Thirteen-year-old Austin Danzo, his mother, and his grandmother will deliver the meal, continuing Austin's volunteering effort that began during COVID-19.  CBS8

CRIME NEWS

  • A Vista man named Cesar Cervantes was arrested on July 3 for stabbing three men during a brawl that began on a Carlsbad train platform on June 19—victims suffered non-life-threatening wounds, he pleaded not guilty to assault and criminal charges, and he will face a preliminary exam readiness conference on Sept. 30 at the Vista Courthouse.  The Coast News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation announced its proposal to bring a free outdoor concert series to public parks starting in 2026—voters can support the plan by using the keyword OCEANSIDE online or by text until September 15. The proposal is a partnership with the City’s Library & Cultural Arts and Parks & Recreation Departments, KOCT Television, and Six String Society—local officials urge everyone to vote.  The Vista Press
  • Oceanside Theatre Company will host two concerts at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater on September 26 and September 27. The first event—starting at 6 p.m.—will showcase blues by Johnny V Vernazza Band and Shane Hall while the second event—starting at 7 p.m.—will offer a Stevie Wonder tribute by Kori Gillis and his 13-piece band.  The Vista Press

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Palomar College has received a $471,000 NSF grant to fund its Tomorrow’s Water Technicians Project over the next three years — the grant will update the water technology program and build partnerships with local water agencies to prepare students for high-demand jobs ahead of spring enrollment in November.  The Vista Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents along the North County coast reported a strong chemical odor on Wednesday evening in Oceanside, Carlsbad, and Encinitas—officials have deployed gas monitors and launched an investigation while assuring there is no immediate public danger.  CBS8

SPORTS NEWS

  • Today, Oceanside hosts the 8th annual US Open Adaptive Surfing Championships held north of the Oceanside Pier (organized by the Stoke for Life Foundation) where adaptive surfers from around the globe compete for $50,000 in prizes and the event runs through Sunday.  CBS8
